Urban Canvas spreading the light!

Two of our helpers and exhibitors, Anthony Donnelly and James Baker of local mural company and public art collective Urban Canvas, have been commissioned to create a temporary bespoke work of art for Tennyson Hall, a former school and community centre. The temporary piece is intended to stimulate discussion within the community about the possible uses for the building and the site. A 22 metre long white neon message spells out a quotation from the famous artist Michelangelo. I SAW AN ANGEL IN THE MARBLE AND I CARVED UNTIL I SET IT FREE

“The sentiment of the quotation suggests to me that with vision and determination something of beauty and magic can be created. The work intends to stand as a symbol of the sites potential and also the surrounding area as a whole. It could also be seen as a metaphor for the rising aspirations and determination of the City of Nottingham and it’s people.” Anthony Donnelly
The work is the pilot project for a public art strategy that Urban Canvas are designing for the area, called Making Alfreton Road Shine.” Urban Canvas are a collective of artists with studios based in NG7.
